If you’re into compressors that absolutely destroy audio in the best way possible, there’s a cool freebie making the rounds again. Pulsar Audio’s Smasher—normally a $49 plugin—is currently available for free for a limited time, and it’s definitely worth grabbing while you can.
Smasher isn’t your typical clean, transparent compressor. It’s based on the classic 1176-style circuit, but specifically locked into that infamous “all buttons in” mode—the one engineers used to get aggressive, explosive compression out of drums and buses. The result is a gritty, punchy sound that can instantly bring energy to otherwise flat tracks.
It shines especially on drums, room mics, and bass, where that over-the-top compression can add weight and character. Blend it in parallel and you get that larger-than-life sound without totally killing your dynamics.
